- Diane Albert is a technical staff member and metallurgist in Los Alamos' Materials Technology Metallurgy Group.Albert’s specialty is fundamental and applied research in the area of mechanical behaviors of metals.
- She uses testing materials to deform pieces of metal that are of interest to her.
- Albert then looks at the deformed microstructures using electron microscopes, like the Scanning Electron Microscope (used to look at surfaces of materials), the Transmission Electron Microscope(used to look at interiors of materials), and the High Resolution Electron Microscope (1.5 million times magnifying power-it can image atoms).
- On a day -to day basis, Albert prepares specimens for microscopic analysis, work on the microscope, read and conduct literature searches in the library, and work with technicians and other scientists planning research projects.
- In 1997, Albert received a resident Fellowship from the National Academy of Engineering and spent six months in Washington, D.C. Through this fellowship, Albert worked with the associate director of the National Academy of Engineering program office on "The Impact of Academic Research on Industrial Performance: A Multi-Industry Study," a project funded by the Alfred Sloan Foundation.
- Albert has a bachelor's degree in metallurgical engineering from Ohio State University and a doctoral degree in metallurgical engineering and materials science from Carnegie Mellon University. Albert has worked at the Laboratory since 1993.
